In collaboration with TU Darmstadt and AIRBUS Aerostructures GmbH, FOOKE has developed a highly innovative 5-axis FSW system that, for the first time, enables Friction Stir Welding (FSW) for the spherically curved fuselage shells of the Airbus A321. Funded by the research project "MeGro" of the Investment and Development Bank of Lower Saxony, this technology demonstrates that traditional riveting can be replaced by FSW – offering enormous advantages for the aviation industry.
The greatest benefit lies in the significant weight reduction of 1 kg per meter of aircraft structure, leading to lower fuel consumption and a more sustainable aviation industry. Additionally, the process improves aerodynamics, reduces maintenance efforts, and enables complete recyclability of the longitudinal seam.
This innovation makes aircraft fuselage joining more efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective – a groundbreaking step for the aviation industry of the future.
